It is really important to help new mentors feel welcome and to value the time they are willing to dedicate to the Dojo. CoderDojo is a volunteer-led movement that would not exist without its community of awesome volunteers!
Induction process for new mentors
As part of the recruitment process, champions should give new mentors the opportunity to experience what the Dojo is like and how it runs. The simplest way to do this is to invite the new mentor along to an upcoming Dojo session. They may like to come a few minutes early to their first Dojo, in order for the champion to walk them through everything that will happen. If their background check has not yet been completed, we recommend for the new mentor to partner up with an existing mentor throughout the session, or until they are vetted according to the regulations in the Dojo’s country or region.
One of the mottos in CoderDojo is 'One rule, be cool'. As part of your safeguarding practice, it is recommended that all volunteers read the CoderDojo Code of behaviour, in order for them to have clear guidelines on what’s ‘cool’.
Free e-learning modules are available for mentors once they have registered an account on Zen, including ‘How to be a CoderDojo mentor,’ ‘CoderDojo ethos: implementation and practice’, and ‘Safeguarding young people in CoderDojo’. The modules can be found in the drop-down menu at the top right of the account page. More information on training and support for volunteers can be found in this section.
